What Is a Wasp?
Some people confuse wasps with bees and hornets, and for good reason—they look somewhat similar, they fly, and they all have the ability to hit you with an extremely painful sting. However, the three species are actually quite different. For starters, bees are generally not aggressive creatures. Likewise, their taste for pollen makes them important pollinators that stimulate growth and reproduction of plants and flowers. They are also averse to stinging, and will only use it as a last resort because that sting actually costs the bee its life.
Wasps are predators and actively hunt smaller insects to consume, and they numb or even kill their prey using their stinger that they can wield at will. In fact, some species of wasp will actually actively hunt and kill bees. They are notorious pests on properties all across the United States, and in fact can even be found around the world except on one continent: Antarctica. While wasps are generally not all that interested in going indoors, they will find their way in if given access. And getting them back out again can be immensely difficult. If you have a problem with wasps, indoors or out, give the team at Issaquah Pest Control a call for help right away.
We deal with all types of wasps including:
- Mud daubers: Mud daubers are actually generally ambivalent to humans, and will pretty much ignore people wherever they go. Of course, that will change if you threaten their nests, which they construct from mud and dirt (hence the name). They are actually widely considered to be beneficial because of their hearty appetite for spiders.
- Paper wasps: These wasps love to build their nests under the eaves of houses across the country. These wasps have characteristic yellow antennae, yellow and black striping, and are also generally passive to humans (but are notorious stingers when they feel their nest is threatened).
- Yellowjackets: Yellowjackets are often confused for paper wasps due to similar striping and colors. However, yellow jackets are notorious stingers, even stinging completely passive bystanders that are several yards away from where their nest is. These should absolutely be handled by a properly trained professional if you have a nest on your property.
At Issaquah Pest Control, we do so much more than offer simple wasp elimination services. We also offer active protection and ongoing monitoring to help you keep wasps away for good. When wasps start to build their nests on your property, give our team a call and let us take care of them for you.
